Jedi Knight Ahura Tehrani and Jedi Shadow Qelian Saida, 3 ATC
There is no contemplation, only duty. The Jedi Order is revered across the Republic as a symbol of peace and justice. Unfortunately, even such paragons of virtue often require less than respectable methods to enforce peace throughout the galaxy.
Jedi Shadows, the Order's secret police, are one such example of this fact. Serving under the Council of First Knowledge, these highly specialized Sentinels are responsible for covertly seeking out and destroying dark siders or their influence. Evil holocrons will be shattered, alchemical beasts slain, and their Sith creators hunted to the ends of the galaxy if necessary to ensure the safety of the Republic's citizens.
Shadows often come dangerously close to the dark side. Because of this, each one is individually selected and tested by the Council of First Knowledge before entering service, though even they can't foresee everything. Many Shadows become paranoid, zealous, aggressive, or socially detached while performing their duties, and as such are generally only assigned in dire circumstances.
Another slightly less sanctioned example is that of the so-called "Sixth Line," a small militant sect who believe in unwavering service to the Republic similar to the Mandalorian Wars' Revanchists. Their members dance with darkness regularly, using their powers in ways that the rest of the Order would likely find distasteful or outright dangerous. Sixth Line adherents usually serve in elite strike teams or as force-sensitive spies, primarily working alongside the Republic Military and Strategic Information Service.
While their numbers have always been dwindling due to corruption and casualties, today the Sixth Line is almost extinct, with most of their members having been killed during the catastrophic Invasion of Ziost or exiled during Chancellor Saresh's subsequent political purges. The few who remain fight on, however, in the hopes that the end of this war may be within reach.
