Site Information and News / Restoration
« on: 10/11/19, 02:34:47 PM »

Hi everyone,

As many of you are doubtless aware, has recently suffered a major outage. Our hosting service has reported a complete loss of the physical machine, but we are in the process of restoring from a backup that was taken shortly before the crash.

Since the backup is being restored in a new environment, we have been working our way past numerous technical problems (required package versions that aren't supported by the host, etc.) but have managed to restore limited forum functionality.

The reason we got the forum itself up ASAP, before anything else, is to return the enormous amount of storytelling content it contains to circulation. As far as we've been able to confirm, all this content is still intact as of Sept 28th (which is when the extant backup was taken). Nevertheless, we caution against adding new posts over the next couple of days, as we're still working on restoring functionality and verifying stability. More information will be forthcoming over the next couple of days.

In the meantime, we encourage everyone to join the official Begeren Colony discord for real-time discussion and more up-to-date information:

This would be going faster if the site staff were independently wealthy hypermatter magnates; unfortunately this is not the case. Restoration has been delayed due to jobs, deadlines, and other unavoidable RL issues. While we regret the frustration and worry that this outage has caused, we also hope for your patience and civility as the process continues.

I logged in after 2+ years away just to post that you'll be missed. Hope that means something.  :lightside:

Today: HATS

Sith Semah in her ritual clothes:

Being the politically-savvy creature he is, I think Vowrawn is intelligent and realistic enough to accept that the Sith Empire is on its way out.  Now that it’s known that the Emperor betrayed them, and the realization that the Treaty of Coruscant really marked the beginning of their end has set in, I think Vowrawn is well positioned to start maneuvering to secure the future of the Sith.

It's hard to predict, since so much of the story is per-character. But small factoid (spoiler for news-broadcast flavor in the new Chiss flashpoint):
Spoiler: Chiss Flashpoint • show

If Acina dies on Iokath, Vowrawn takes the throne.
So he is still alive at minimum, even after brokering the treaty with Zakuul.

I absolutely have tried that, but no response. I can only assume it's someone who took a break, or a rarely played alt. This post is mostly a last-ditch effort.

Just saw it with Livia. I don't really have a bunch of deep thoughts about it, and I'm sure that by now all the thoughts I'd have had have already been said. THEREFORE! I shall sum up in time for us to prevent Humperdink from marry Buttercup in little less than half an hour.

It was an excellently executed, well-acted, pretty great piece of Star Wars fan-fiction.

Wait, wait. No, seriously. Hold on. WAIT! That's not a bad thing.

Part of the joy and beauty of Star Wars is in its ability to be a big space-fantasy melting pot, where canon is only sorta canon and we can ignore midichlorians and porgs to the degree we wanna. At this point, fan fiction is all we have. Star Wars is a big prayer meeting! The First Reformed Jedi-as-warrior-monks-in-taoist-martial-arts-movies can sit down here together with the southern elevated Light-is-Nothing-Without-Darkness-Take-Seriousliers. Different perspectives enrich the pot. It's the best part of Star Wars as fantasy, not science fiction.

So I'm just grateful to have seen someone's Star Wars dreams put up on the big screen.
I'll ignore the fact that the First Order needs to fire whomever builds its ships without adequate point-defense systems.  :nuu:
I'll get over the way my hopes for Snoak were dashed horribly.
Just give me another 30-second ending scene of kids playing with lightsaber brooms.  :lightside:  :aww:

Also, there were pretty great philosophical parallels with B5 in there. Kriff. I said I didn't have any deep thoughts, so let's pretend I didn't say that, ok?

We now go live to Darth Badmotherkriffer Darkington in the ruins of the Galactic Senate Tower:
The senate had to die; every last one of them. And the staffers. And the janitors. And their little puppies, too.
Of course I let that pregnant food-service worker go, because I'm not a monster, and also she reminded me of my mother.
I'm balanced and stuff, ok?

Orell gets it. I grew up religious, so "a little leaven spoils the loaf" came to mind.

I can't decide if that picture is soothing, disturbing, or sexual.
(Hope all is well in BC land. <3)

I came back to this forum after months away just to complain about the trailer. Clearly this movie isn't real Star Wars and I have to watch it 27.5 times just so I can agonize about its flaws and post long screeds about it except aren't kids doing youtube reaction videos now? (The half time is because once Luke said "balance" and I had to get up and leave because I was having trouble keeping my milk duds down. They were real duds, JUST LIKE THIS MOVIE)

/sarcasm off

/real thoughts on

You don't make bread out of 50% yeast. If you try you get pretty shitty bread that kills all the baby bread you have rising.

I wrote a grant proposal.

I think the proposed work is pretty novel.
